So, Em, why come back for more???
Why indeed! Basically because I had such a fantastic time on the last one! We worked really hard before we went to raise all the money we needed and to get ourselves fit enough for the challenge and once we were there it was worth every single second, every moment of despair when we didn’t think we were going to make the target and every time I had forced myself to the gym when all I wanted to do was go home and eat chocolate! We made it after all that and it is really an amazing feeling, the sense of achievement is incredible and when you realize that what you have done is not just about having a “great holiday” but also about helping people it gives you a nice warm glow inside that just makes me want to do it again!

Why still Scope? Something our Scope rep said to us on the first day really stuck with me; “There will be days on this challenge where you will feel that you can’t go on, but just remember that whilst that one day is a tough uphill challenge for you the people that Scope reach out to have to face an uphill challenge every day”, it really made me think.

Worst moment of the trek in Guatemala? It was really hot on Day Four and I think I got a touch of sun stroke as I went to bed feeling v dodgy. I woke up about 1am, and I was so hot I thought I was going to explode. I had no water in my drinking bottle so I had to stumble out of the tent in search of some. I was so weak I could hardly walk! Thankfully I was OK to walk the next day and luckily it was not a big day (only 5 hours!) with no big hills so I survived!

Best moment? Impossible to pick just one! On the first day we went to a village which had been affected by the recent hurricane. As we walked into the village they all started clapping as we were taking them warm clothing (it gets very cold at night when you are at altitude). It was a very humbling moment. Reaching the top of San Pedro Volcano on the final day was a massive moment of triumph. The views were incredible and made all that slogging at the gym worth while.

Would you recommend it to a friend? Definitely, if you're up for the challenge! With the right amount of training it was not physically impossible, the biggest challenge is the mental one. Getting your head around everything you have to do to raise the funds can be quite daunting but it is definitely worth the effort. For me it was certainly easier doing it with a friend too! Having someone to encourage me along the way helped. Tali should be commended for her qualities as a "tent-buddy" (even though she did abandon me one night!). .
