Back!

Well I am, Tali is still out there exploring the delights of India!

What an amazing experience! We were lucky to have another great bunch of fellow trekkers, saw some amazing landscapes and get to know a little bit about the wonderful place we were privileged enough to visit.

Camping this time was 5 star luxury, we had pillows and showers (well hot water in a bucket with a jug!) which were most appreciated after 12 hours of trekking! We experienced the true extremes of mountain weather hiking one day in 47 degree heat and rain the next. The altitude certainly made it tough on the old lungs too!

Anyway, here are a few pics for you to enjoy, am sure that Tali will add more when she gets back next week but just to give you a wee taste of what we've been up to!

As always, thank you soooooo much to everyone who has supported us in our fund raising activities, as as group we raised almost 80,000GBP for Scope which is fantastic and goes a long way to helping them carry on all the great work they do.
Thanks again.

Nous sommes arrive!

We can't actually believe it yet (but thats probably the lack of sleep!) but after months of fundraising and an incredibly long journey yesterday we have arrived in Ladakh! We are both feeling a little ropey but not really sure if its the fatigue or the affects of altitude.

We are currently at 3,500m above sea level so we will be staying here for a couple of days to aclimatize before we start trekking on Tuesday.

We've not seen much so far but its clear that this is an amazing country!

Lots of love from a very tired

One Night of Food and Music

GG_Girls_shamelss_poster.jpg

Well finally we did it, after saying for the last two years of our fund raising activites that we are going to hold a Shameless concert, we finally did!!

Our fund raising activities are drawing to a close and its not long before we are off to India so we decided that we would make our last event a big bash which also tied in very nicely with both of our birthdays! Still true fund raisers at heart we did not miss the chance to sell a few raffle tickets!!

Massive, massive thanks to everyone at The Robin Hood, especially Claire who made the whole thing so easy to arrange. And of course a massive, massive thanks to Shameless for donating their talent for the evening, sorry it took us so long to get our acts together boys!!

Judging by all the dancing that took place it is very fair to say that a good time was had by all! Thanks to everyone who came down!

Thankfully (or not depending on your point of view, I personally could have done with a bit of a lie in!) we managed to avoid the rain long enough on Sunday to climb La Cruz. Given the cloud cover and the rapidly advancing fog, the views were not what they could have been but I think it is fair to say that a good day out was had by all!

The Only Way Is Up

DSC03503.JPG

Well apart from a few navigational difficulties to start (and I am not trying to absolve myself of blame here but surely it is each individuals responsibility to make sure they know where they are going and not just blindly follow some blonde chick who looks like she knows where she is going) fun was had by all on the climb of Sierra Crestillina on Sunday. Thank you all for coming, hope to see you next time!!

Also congrats to Estrella for winning the brunch for two at Giangrossi following the Pancake Day Raffle. Well done to Natalie and Peter who were also lucky in the draw!

Pancake Day

pancakedayposter.jpg

We're inviting everyone to test our waitressing skills next Tuesday 20th February. The occasion is PANCAKE DAY and we are celebrating it at the ice-cream-specialists-and-all-things-delicious Giangrossi in Marbella. The lovely people there have very kindly agreed to donate ALL their profits from the sale of their incredibly tasty pancakes on Tuesday 20th Feb to our favourite charity Scope. So we would love it if you all came down with friends, family and random strangers next Tuesday from 5pm to indulge yourselves and donate to a worthy cause at the same time. The warm fuzzy glow will be twice as fuzzy and twice as glowy!

For those that aren't sure where Giangrossi is, go to Cafeteria Marbella, walk towards the beach and it is on the junction on the right hand side. The car park in Alameda Square is about 1 minute away.

Hope to see you there!!

When it rains, it pours........................

Those of you on the Costa del Sol may have noticed that the weather is not great at the mo.........major rain has been forecast for tomorrow and massive cloud cover means that no-one has seen the top of La Concha for about three days!!!

Following advice from the experts, it is with deep regret that we announce we are going to have to postpone our planned trip to La Concha tomorrow.......

Fear not though, we have already spoken to the Delegacion and they have agreed to provide the guides and the coach for another trip in the New Year, so put this date in your diary SATURDAY 13th JANUARY. For those who have already signed up, your donation shall be "transferred" for the next date (we are happy to arrange a refund for those who are unable to make the next date). And for those of you who couldn't make it this weekend.....now you have another chance!

Sorry we didn't do a better job at controlling the weather!!!

CONQUER LA CONCHA!

laconcha1.jpg

We've been getting really pally with the people at the Delegación de Medioambiente at the Ayuntamiento and they have offered us the use of 2 guides to take a bunch of people up to the top of La Concha!

As this is something that most of our friends always mean to do but never get round to it then we thought it could be an excellent way for people to put New Years Resolutions to rest before the year is out!

Its an excellent day out, you get the most AMAZING views of the whole of the Costa del Sol from the peak, you spend the day in the fresh air and surrounded by nature and you will feel SO virtuous by the end of it! You will also get to experience what we shall be doing on a daily basis in Ladakh next year, those of you who think we are doing it for the free holiday shall soon be silenced!

The walk will take place on Saturday 25th November. There is a possibility of the loan of a coach which could do 2 pick ups, one by the bus station in San Pedro and another at the Supersol on the Golden Mile. Parking is easy at either of the venues. Pick up will probably be around 9:00 am with a view to start walking at 10am Details to follow.

You will need to wear walking shoes or good trainers, warm clothes (do layers) bring something waterproof (like a lovely cagoule!), plenty of water - approx. 2 litres as walking is thirsty work and snack bars and something to eat when we get to the top.And a camera to record the moment!!

All we are asking for is for a small donation to our charity of 10€ per person which goes direct to Scope. You can donate by clicking on the donate button or you can hand it over to us in person before the event (we don't want to hike the mountain with lots of cash in our pockets!)

Please send your reply to talimunchkin@hotmail.comas soon as possible so we can begin planning the rest of details and feel free to forward this message to family, friends or anyone who would be interested. Groups are more than welcome.

Look forward to seeing you all!

There was merriment and dancing and even a few Karaoke stars! Big congrats to the raffle winners: Mark who took away the bottle of Bells, the impossibly handsome Gerry who took away the Scrumpy Jack and Saul who took away the chocs and then wooed us all with a karaoke number to celebrate!

As always a massive thanks to Mr & Mrs Hogan for kindly donating their bar! And a big thank you to Maggie who was a huge help!

All-hallow-even

The Hogan Stand in San Pedro has once again opened its doors to the Guatemala Girls and has agreed to be our hosts for our first event this season: The Halloween Party!

Featuring all kinds of Halloween treats, ghostly punch, fancy dress and of course what no Halloween Party should be without: a karaoke machine!!!!

We shall be asking for a small donation on the door and shall also be hosting a mini-raffle with some booze themed prizes (Which really are the best kind of prizes! Besides we know you'd much rather win a bottle of wine than a two week holiday to Barbados!)

So another date for your diary: Halloween Party at the Hogan Stand on Saturday 28th October.

PS We shall be in our best witches outfits and would like to see what fancy dress outfits you guys can come up with!!

GGOT have decided to challenge all those of you out there who think that we just do these challenges to get a free holiday. We will be climbing La Concha on 25th November as part of our training for the next trek and invite you all to join us!

The "Delegacion de Medio Ambiente" in Marbella have kindly agreed to lend us one of their highly skilled staff to guide a group up the mountain!

For those of you reading this outside of the Costa del Sol, click here to view some pretty cool pics of La Concha.

As always keep checking out the web page as we will be posting more details as they are confirmed but for now put the date in your diary, on 25th November you will be joining us on a hike up the mountain!

Well, thanks to the very generous contributions of lots of our friends here on the coast we have had some very successful market experiences of late!

So, whats the latest?

Well the latest is...... we are now well and truly "settled" back into "life after trek". For those of you who haven't visited the site for a while, shame on you! Best click onto Events right away to download the slideshow of all our trek piccies.

After hours of discussions we have finally decided where we want to go next year. If we can manage to reach our fundraising target once again then we will be joining Scope on their June 2007 trek to Ladakh, the area of India known as Little Tibet. I know that date sounds far away but when you are trying to raise 8,000€ every second counts!

SO keep your eye's peeled and remember to check the site regularly as we shall soon be updating it with our all of our fundraising activities (we have already started by selling our wares at the local markets, getting up at 5:30am on a Sunday......the things you do for a good cause!)

If anyone feels the urgent need to donate to our next trip please don't feel you have to wait for the webpage to be updated, you can donate online here

Catch you soon!

The Best of Guatemala

Dec 05 101.jpg

Its been 6 weeks since our return and we are still revelling in the glory of our Guatemala trek and boring friends and strangers alike with our recounting of funny anecdotes and disturbing physiological problems suffered on Trek. However, for the website, we've kept most of those things away as the motto "What happens on Trek, stays on Trek" is more rule than guideline at the moment.

For your entertainment and general amusement we have now collected in as many photos as possible and put them in a handy format for you to download and view from the comfort of your standard grey office swivel chair. You will need Quicktime in order to view (if your computer doesn't have it then its easy to download from the Quicktime website but most computers have it as standard). So, fanfare, drums, and presenting....The Best of Guatemala!

Been There, Done That, Got Several T-shirts!

P1010633.JPG
We can now officially say that we are seasoned campers and trekkers. After six days of hard core walking (including one day where we walked for 11 hours!!) we have come back from Guatemala with severe sun burn, calf muscles that you could bounce a quarter on, buns of steel and a least a kilo lighter!
As a group we raised over 75,000 GBP for Scope which certainly gives you as nice warm glow inside, well done to all of you for your donations, you made that total happen!
The trip was inspiring (so much so that we are seriously considering doing another one next year)and we met a fantastic group of people. Check out the forthcoming "Photo Hall of Fame" for a second by second review of the the trip (there are hundreds of pics!!!) and the "Diary of a Scoper".
Finally a massive thanx to everyone for their continued support throughout our fundraising efforts.
lots of love

The Last Stand

Image035.jpg

The deadline is drawing ever closer and it won’t be long now til we are heading back to the UK set to off on our journey to Guatemala. We had a wee send off in Hogan Stand to say cheerio to all those who have supported us in our fundraising efforts in the last few months (looking good in those t-shirts girls!).
We took the opportunity to draw the raffle so congrats to Paul for winning the whiskey, Jacqueline took home the vodka, Mitzi took away the Moet and the giant Toblerone went to Mary, we hope you enjoy your prizes guys!!!

We have been very busy doing lots of training with almost daily visits to the gym and there is hardly a mountain track on the Costa del Sol that we have not trekked so here’s hoping it’ll serves us well when we get there!
Massive thanx to everyone for their support.

Following the success of our jumble experience in Fuengirola we decided it was about time we did another one. This time we took our wares to the Sunday market in Sabinillas. Despite getting up before the crack of dawn, it was a very sunny day and fun was had by all.
Thanx to the contributions of Jacob John (only five months old and already he realises how much his Auntie Tali and Aunite Em like gifts even if it was only his old clothes!) we were very busy again and managed to raise a pretty penny!

Unfair Disadvantage Take Home the Prize

Once again Quiz Master Warburton was on hand at the Hogan Stand on Thursday night to test the knowledge of us wee mortals. Obviously with Christmas fast approaching lots of people were at their works do's and we only managed to scrape together three teams, still at least everyone was guaranteed a prize!
The General Knowledge Round was particularly trying this week, and the score was tied at 7 each going into the second round (seriously who knows what a cockchafer is!). The second round On The Map proved too much for the Guatemala Girl (having been abandoned by the rest of my usual team mates I found myself all alone and geography is always Tali’s forte).
Things were pretty neck and neck between Merry Christmas and Unfair Disadvantage for the remaining rounds of Music (without Mitzi there was just no hope for me on this one), Literature and Crime and Punishment. It was Unfair Disadvantage who took the title and the 50 euro prize so congrats to them. The white and red wine went to Merry Christmas and The Bar Props (Guatemala Girl’s alias for the evening) took away the breakfast vouchers.

The Triv challenge proved to be a bit much for all teams with an average score of 4 (although maybe the 7.50 € prize just wasn’t inspiring them!). Luckily Quiz Master Warburton had another card up his sleeve and the prize was taken by The Bar Props (although on “Which river does Glasgow stand?” really stretched the old brain!).

Big thanks to all those who came, especially Eamon and Paul who proved to be very worthy team-mates.

Quiz Night At The Hogan Stand

Hogan Stand Logo.jpg
Once again a massive thanks to all those who came to the Thursday night quiz at the Hogan Stand again this week.
As defending champions the Guatemala Girls started well with full marks on the General Knowledge Round, unfortunately they couldn't quite keep their strength up for the remaining rounds which were: TV sitcoms, Adventure Films, Music and Europe. It was all too much for the Guatemala Girls and they were pipped to the post at the last minute by the teachers visiting from Madrid.
Having won the second prize of the bottle of red wine and the bottle of white wine, we donated them to the Triv Challenge Prize in order to shake up some interest! Unfortunately Mitzi had no moments of inspiration this week and the Triv Challenge prize was taken by the Gemma, Lee and Friends!

Thanks to all those who came to show their support and don't forget we'll be doing it again this week!

Quiz Night!

logo.jpg
Thanks to all those who came to the re-launch of the quiz at The Hogan Stand last night. Mr Warburton was outstanding as the MC and had obviously spent a long time coming up with questions to stump the crowd. The music, TV, geography, literature and general knowledge rounds were no match for the Guatemala Girls however as they romped into the lead. Allegations of rigging were totally unfounded and the prize money went straight into the fundraising pot! Second and third prizes of wine and breakfast vouchers were also gratefully received.
The Triv Challenge was as always, quite a challenge. Lady Luck was clearly smiling down on us last night as two of the questions on the card were about The Wizard of Oz (do you really expect a team of three girls to get those wrong!), so The Guatemala Girls were victorious again!
Ma-husive thanks to Mitzi, we wouldn't have been able to do it without her! "Isn't it called a tote?", such simple words but they made all the difference!

Hey There Sports Fans

DSC00145.JPG

Well, what can I say, am very excited to be joining this event especially as I have spent many months listening to Tali and Toads talking about the whole thing and wishing that I was going too!!

Obviously joining at the last minutes is very nerve wracking as there is still a lot to be done in terms of fund raising and time is running out. I also only have about 5 minutes to get myself fit enough to trek all those mountains, still I love a challenge!!

But The Blonde of the Century never flakes in the face of adversity so am sure that we shall be triumphant!

Posted by Tali at 11:17 PM | Comments (0)

Its hard to say goodbye

No! We're not setting off yet! But unfortunately other commitments have meant that Toads can no longer come to Guatemala in February.

We've had fun doing things together so far and I will her miss her input as the event draws closer. I was thinking of how hard it was going to be clambering over Mayan volcanoes and washing with nothing but a cup of water all by myself....but luckily, I can now drag someone else along for the ride!

Emma, the Blonde of the Century, is stepping in at the last minute to add all her energies to the final furlong of the project :)

The project is now back in full swing and all donations very (VERY) warmly accepted (Toads - do you fancy sponsoring us?) Our deadline is 5th December to get as much money in The Pot as possible, so please donate online on this site or come down to one of our events and make a personal contribution!

Love, tali

The litre and a half of Jack Daniels was won by Steve Keys, regular Hogan's pub quiz supporter and hard working member of International Mortgage Solutions. We raised a total of 200€ and so we're quite chuffed that it did so well. Check us out next month when we'll be raffling off another insane amount of alcohol!

Brazil 1970 vs Taps

Yet another successful night at The Hogan Stand and once more the local teams pitching head to head to win the glorious prize of 30€ of booze, courtesy of Mr Hogan. The outcome, that is becoming scarily predictable, was obvious when Brazil 1970 looked overjoyed to have paid for their bar bill for the 3rd week in a row.... Guatemala Girls came a respectable second from last. Not bad for a bunch of girls really!

Competitive tempers were flying in the Trivial Pursuit Challenge as it became immediately apparent that the only 2 teams with a chance of winning would be Brazil & Taps. Out of the 7 teams, 5 were knocked out in Q1 with: "Where do cars that have the registration letters GBA come from?" So that you don't spend the next 2 minutes on Google the answer is: Alderney (Channel Islands) As the yellow, green, pink and brown questions turned up identical answers, it all hinged precariously on the Sport & Leisure round...Allan repeated the question (just to add to the suspense) - something about poker, highest winning hands and wild cards (We're a little hazy on the exact wording seeing as neither of us know a thing about poker)....the 2 answers in front of me: 5 aces or Royal Flush...? Triumphant victory screams from Taps' side of the pub as 5 aces won the Big Jackpot of 17.50€ ;) As head spokesman for Taps, Paul, from Telford, said "Another excellent result - we enjoyed ourselves!" Taps very kindly donated their winnings back to Scope to add to the pot - THANKS!
Brazil 1970 were slightly forlorn as their answer sheet clearly proved that they had originally put down 5 aces and hastily scribbled over it with Royal Flush. "Well, what's better? Winning over 6 questions or winning over 30?" said Brazil team's Dave. An excellent way of looking at it if you ask us! So once again, we raised nearly 100€ - thanks to everyone who came down :)

Calling all you Shameless people

Guatemala Girls Events have managed to persuade, with a bit of "shameless" blackmail and not a small amount of pleading, the local rockers Shameless to perform a charity gig for us in September. Venue: tbc. Date: tbc (but probably Sept 10th) but you should be checking this website on an hourly basis for the updates :) Join the Shameless Hussies in the moshpit or be a Shameless Hombre and do your best air guitar impression along with the bass solo in Walk on the Wild Side. Checkout the Shameless boys and watch this ________.

The Hogan Stand Pub Quiz

The Quiz is now into its 5th week of fundraising and beginning to see some teams making it a fixture for their Thursday nights. Brazil 1970, Taps and The Burbidges of Erdington and a mixture of local hopefuls and "feeling lucky" holidaymakers now pitch head to head every week....

The Quiz will be on this Thursday and every Thursday until John Hogan tells us to b***** off and stop messing up his pub.
Kick off is at 10.00 and entry is 2€ per person and the winners get 30€ behind the bar and a bottle of bubbly....
....the temperature dial then gets dangerously close to overheating with the Triv Challenge - 5€ per team, answer all 6 questions on a Trivial Pursuit card and the cash jackpot is yours! No one wins, then there's a rollover to the next week!

Allan, the unintelligible Irish Master of Ceremonies will be hosting as always, and the Guatemala Girls will be there desperately trying not to come in last (again).
Come down and prove how trivial you really are!

The Launch

Howdy doody to you and welcome to Tali and Toadey's aka Guatemala Girls' website. Topic of the day: Ever tried to raise 8000€? We haven't. In fact, neither of us has ever set ourselves a task quite like this. We won't go into why (check out our personal profiles for that) but this is the running commentary on our attempt to carry out a personal challenge. Not living proof but more like cyberproof that we're here, plugging away at collecting every last cent of donations available to us.

Reading this message, you're one of the first people to see the website and your thoughts and first impressions are vital - so please post a comment!
Got a brilliant fundraising idea for us - post a comment!
Want to tell us something that we got wrong - think you caught the drift!

We'll be updating this site with our weekly events, results, latest sponsors and collaborators and general thoughts on the fundraising learning curve. We want other people to participate in this website and encouragement from friends, family, and supporters of any kind will keep this challenge, and as such this website, going.

As much as we would like to pretend that encouragement is what will keep this going, we would be mad to think that it's the ONLY thing that is going to keep this going. Ultimately, we need cash. 8000€ of it. We've already got the ball rolling and we've had events for the last month and a lot more in the pipeline. Please show your support for us and our cause by donating - all major credit cards accepted!

Oh, and please come back and visit us next week!

Guatemala Girls xx

P.S. Ed, our top designer, has just told me that the comments system isn't fully operational yet....apparently his normal full time job is taking up a lot of time at the moment or some such flimsy excuse. Small setback for our launch, but anyhoo. So, if you want to tell us something, then either hold that thought til Thursday, or email us at thegirls@guatemalagirls.org :)
